The Next New Thing

A current type of new media that doesn't exist is a sociable virtual reality. At the moment developers of the Oculus Rift has only been able to implement a single player version of the VR. Due to this, there is a no social networking available. If virtual reality could be made into a multiplayer type setting, it would be very interesting to see how others would interact during an online chat session or mmorpg. This would be like the anime Sword Art Online, where users would interact with each other in a game over virtual reality. This would be really cool and innovative. I would like to see this to become the next new media.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

I have not added any content yet, but I would like to work on discussing the negative aspects of using social media. I have recently wrote my paper on this topic and this seems like a better option for me to partake in. I will try to help edit classmate's wiki if they are in a topic related to me. Information regarding hacking and swatting seems fun.

P2P File Sharing

File sharing is the sharing of public or private date to multiple individuals or the masses. File sharing is basically when a file is given to someone else other than yourself. The recipient is allowed to read, view, write, modify, copy, or print the file that was handed to them. Popular file sharing storage devices accessible by almost everyone is Dropbox and google drive. File sharing is very helpful in getting information across.

Peer to peer file sharing (P2P) is the sharing of digital software such as books, movies, or games over the network to other computers. For a P2P file sharing to work, the user would have to install a P2P software program. This enables the user to download and upload files from and to the internet. Popular P2P file sharing sites are BitTorrent, uTorrent, and Pirates Bay. These P2P file sharing sites are also not very safe because of copyrights, viruses, and the risks involved when using these. According to NMA Staff article, producers should take advantage of P2P sharing. P2P sharing can help content producers bring the big audiences needed at a faster rate. With the millions of users in accessing P2P software daily, content is easily distributed and is beneficial to the producer.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Well new media is basically a rapidly growing technology that usually involves the internet. Privacy and confidentiality is considered one of the biggest issues. On new media, the lack of security is considered the problem that causes the issue. Hackers and other people can tap your information and learn about you. Other ways new media causes problems is the way advertises take advantage of you. They would should you a certain perspective and see how you respond to it. After getting past this test, brokers and markers basically found the right audience in whom to sell their product and services to. This allows them to find how you behave and interact. Information is easily spread around through the use of new media. While information is easily spreadable this relates to the lack of privacy. Information should be safeguarded.

Advice to Baruch College

How can new media be used to improve Baruch College?
Well new media is the use of a virtual world. In Baruch College, I feel everyone is stuck up. No one wants to be your friend, help you, or care for you. One of the ways to join a club is to get involved in clubs, but not everyone has the time for that. Even if a classmate would email a person for help, a major number of people would ignore this individual for their own gain. This happens especially in a competitive environment such as Baruch College. A virtual world of Baruch College may be used to help create an interaction with multiple people. This world would help create new friends and connection. It can also forge bonds with people that don't join the same club or meet you at the same time. New media can also help students gather together to tackle hard topics such as accounting.  It allows individuals to share ideas. I feel there are numerous ways in which new media can help evolve Baruch College, like how new media itself evolves.

Creativity and new media

New media fosters creativity because the amount of things you can do in a virtual world is unlimited. In the second life, a virtual world, my character started out in a deserted island, but I was able to instantly transport my avatar to a Chinese mansion setting.  You can see the amount of effort put into the scenery to create this Chinese aspect. This means that in many different scenario, people can join a scenery to their liking and also create one.

Creativity

New media fosters because it provides efficient brainstorming and allows our minds to be open. In the article, "Twitter serves up ideas from its followers", shows how twitter can useful to big and small companies. These social media platforms allows owners to find out what their customers like and what they wanted to change. It allows the company to evolve and tweak its performance to bring in more customers. Twitter can change and upgrade their basic functions which helps their users. A change would be instead of writing "retweet", it can shortened to RT. New media allows people to answer questions such as "Why are people using this and how could we make that better?". This questions allows creativity to expand.
